How To: Add New Part

How to add a new part.

This page shows you how to add a new part.

First open a new body editor window

Then press the add bodies button and select a body part type.

Since we don't have any bodies added to the organism we don't have to worry about selecting a joint type.  This will be our root body.  Now that we have add bodies mode selected and a body part type select select anywhere in the 3D_Display to add the body.

You'll notice that in the hierarchy panel that a new element has been added.  This is the body that we just added.  You'll also notice that the properties panel shows properties for body we just added.  The white transparent box surrounding our box is called the selection box.  This lets you know what body is currently selected.  The arrows sticking out of the selection box are the local orientation arrows.  They are vary similar to the world orientation arrows except they show the orientation of this particular body (For more information see How To Manipulate A Part)

Now that we have a root body lets add another body.  This time a Cylinder.  Select the cylinder from the drop down list and select add bodies button.

Lets add the cylinder to the top of the box.  To do this, click and drag on the black space to rotate your view so that you can see the top of the box.  Then click anywhere on the top of the box to add the cylinder

Congratulations you just added a new body part.  The cylinder was connected to the box via a hinge joint (Default Joint Type).
